There are 4 main characters in this book: Mason, Aries, Clementine, and Michael. When this whole "Apocalypse" happened Mason's school has been bombed. He and 3 others have been on the run trying to survive. Mason was one of those characters who would just run into trouble without realizing it. On the other hand, Clementine would cautiously wait for hours to see if people were looting a store that she was about to go into. Aries was sorta like a leader. She would have to take charge when everyone else was cowering in a corner. Michael was the one who would make friends with other survivors really fast, soon willing to betray them in order to survive. Most of the people in school rely on Aries. According to page 97, "What do we do now?' Amanda muttered. Colin stood up from his chair. "I'm going home." "We should stay here," Aries said. "It's not safe inside." Aries is a static character. She would never back down from the hardest task, even if it meant losing her life. Mason runs into danger VERY easily. According to page 138, "Oh, Mr. Dowell?" Mason turned back to face Twiggy. "Yeah?" The coffee mug sailed through the air, smashing into the side of Mason's face. Mason loves running into a trap. He stays as a static character.  Clementine was usually  cautious with her surroundings. According to page 69, "She could have run into the fields and taken cover in the corn. It would have provided better shelter in the long run. Because she knew that the second they finished searching the house they'd come and check the barn." Clementine stays static. She always double checks the locks on doors and windows to make sure nobody can get in or out. Michael betrayed his friends and left them to die. According to page 167. "The last thing he saw was the look on Evan's face. The locked eyes, Evans narrowed until after completely closed." Later on in the book Michael starts to change. Michael is Dynamic.  He meets Clementine and they start to work together to fight off the Baggers.

No one knows how the apocalypse started. They say it was the destructive earth quakes that made the people go insane. This is a conflict because it makes the characters in the story face difficulties because there is constantly lunatics trying to kill them. The characters need to hide from these people. They also have to watch their surroundings. If they encounter them, they either have to run or try and kill them. The conflict is both. It is internal because the characters never know when they might start to go insane. It is also external because it is other people who try and kill them. According to page 314, "He'd seen the guy coming and managed to get Clementine out of the way before he took the hit. The pain in his wounded hand was horrible, but he clenched his teeth tightly and fought back the nausea welling up in his stomach." Another sentence that has to do with conflict is in page 316. "Earthquake!" "The building started shaking, makeup and perfume bottles were knocked off the counters, and the sickening smell of a thousand different scents filled the air." The Conflict is resolved. Most of the Baggers are dead thanks to the Earthquake that collapsed in their base where the Baggers slept. Of course there will still be Baggers roaming around the streets, with permanent home to live in.

An important event in this book is when Mason and the group encounter the Baggers hangout.  This scene is important because there are hundreds of Baggers waiting to feed on them. This creates conflict because the Baggers are ready to fight against several survivors. It shows the courage and passion of Aries because while she is fighting, others are starting to back away but she does not retreat. The lesson is not to rush into things unexpectedly. First check your surroundings and scout the area before entering. Jack starts to react in a frightened manner. He does not fight back so a baseball bat comes crashing down his skull. This occurs in a falling action manner. The conflict with another group of Baggers outside of the supermarket has been resolved, but then they encounter even more Baggers inside the supermarket! According to page 315, "He got to them too late; the baseball bat driving down the back of Jack's skull." Another quote in a main event is in page 311, "The area has been completely cleaned out. Hundreds of sleeping bags lined the floor, pressed tightly together like sardines."  What are the chances of an earthquake killing most of the Baggers in the supermarket? Did an outside force cause this Earthquake?
