Growth Mindset:
The principal idea of a person with a growth mindset is that he/she believes that intelligence and other qualities are not fixed traits but in fact something that they can improve. There are also people who have fixed mindsets who believe that intelligence is determined ever since birth and they can only have fixed qualities, none of which they can change. In the article, “The Effort Effect” written by Marina Krakovsky, it is stated that “Failure is information-we label it failure, but it’s more like, ’This didn’t work, I'm a problem solver, and I’ll try something else’” (10). If a person with a growth mindset makes a mistake, they don’t believe that they are a failure but instead believe think that they just made an error and that they should try harder to find the correct solution. According to Marina, “British soccer culture held that soccer players are born, not made” (2). For people who have fixed mindsets, their ideology is that they are born with skills, which they are limited to and cannot enhance. According to a video made by RSA, it declares the following, “In my work we find that some students have a fixed mindset about their intellectual abilities and talents. They think that intelligence is just a fixed trait. You have a certain amount and that’s that.” (0.14-0.28). However, in reality, you have the ability to develop your intelligence and to develop your mindset no matter what you may think. By overcoming challenges, you can improve your abilities or talents. This is how many famous people became who they are today, as they faced challenges and overcame their fears. There is a paradox that someone might believe that they are so talented at a certain ability that they don’t want to train anymore because they are so good. In conclusion, a growth mindset makes people able to achieve greater heights, as they learn from their mistakes and are not afraid to do a challenges.
The Artifact
Our artifact represents a super strong guy easily carrying weights, not willing to improve. It will be a drawing of a guy that goes to the gym to show off his muscles because he is so buff. He will not choose to lift heavier weights because he is so buff and that he thinks that he does not need to lift weights to improve anymore. It connects with the essential idea because it is showing how people with fixed mindsets such as him act. It displays a paradox because the super strong guys self consciously thinks that he is so strong that he does not need to lift weights anymore, yet he could still improve to be able to lift even heavier weights. Another example of paradox is a student in a classroom not needing to study for a test. He thinks that he is too smart to study. A soccer player might not want to go to practice because he may believe that he is too good at soccer so therefore, he doesn’t need to practice. Our artifact is significant because it reveals what happens when you think that you have no more room to improve.
F.I.N.D Activity:
Fact- One fact of the Crucible is how John Proctor was about to confess, but he tore the document where he was supposed to sign his name.
Internal Connection- While reading about "The Crucible", I felt as if as if Abigail was favored around the town of Salem. Once she saw that people appreciated her and respected her, she used that to her advantage. The whole town of Salem caused the mass hysteria. Neighbors saw others being falsely accused and spoke nothing of it.
New Idea- A new idea that I learned while reading "The Crucible" was how I realized that Abigail was not trustworthy and was a liar. I also thought of how the town of Salem would be if Abigail never existed, or if Abigail's parents did not die.
Decision- A decision that I made based on reading "The Crucible" was that Judge Danforth was only putting innocent people on trial just for fame and reputation.
October Reflection
I am doing really well in reaching my goals. I was able to take some tests for Mr. Axtell. I am able to read a lot more books now that I ordered some from Amazon. I participate more than I used to but not as much as I would like to. Some strengths are essay writing and collaboration. Some weaknesses are participation and tests. I feel successful as a writer. Some stuff that is challenging for me are starting out introduction paragraphs. Analyzing and citing evidence is easy for me. I want to work on participating more in the month of November because I want to be able to bring my grade up.
Freedoms and Conflicts
Some benefits of freedom is that you get to be able to follow your own religion without anyone telling you too. Freedom comes at a price. In other words, civilians had to fight for their natural rights. Some benefits that you get out of conflict is freedom. People create conflict for freedom. Conflict also comes at a cost. You can put your life on the line when in conflict, if it is dangerous. Without conflict, freedom doesn't exist. People fought for their natural rights in order to gain freedom. Freedom and Conflict are not true opposites. There is no paradoxical relationship between Freedom and Conflict. One current event happening around me is the white supremacist. They believe that their race is the superior race. As long as they don't create any riots or viscous protest, they are protected by the First Amendment.
The Garbage Man Speaks of Garbage
I’ve known garbage
I’ve know garbage ancient as the world and older than the
Flow of recycled plastic in the ocean.
My soul has grown deep like the garbage.
I collected the trash in 21st street when dawns were young
I lived in an apartment with very little money
I looked upon America and cleaned the nation
I heard the joyful singing of our country when Waste Management
Came to our country, and I’ve seen it's dirty environment
Turn all clean in the sunset
I’ve known garbage
Ancient, dirty garbage.
My existence has grown deep like the garbage.
